Summary of Chapter 6 of Unspun - Cyberspace
It is hard to define the term "cyberspace" since it is so vast a concept and cannot really be placed into any sort of category. It is in a sence a metaphor for all the connections made everyday on the Web. It is a type of "self-fullfilling prophecy" as Sheilds puts it, that creates itself more more and more each time someone becomes connected to the Web.
Cyberspace has also been described by Michael Benedickt as "a parallel universe" which is in existance because of all the world's computers sustain it. Cyberspace was onece even considered a type of utopia in which one could escape from everyday life.
Neuromancer by William Gibson describes cyberspace as an overheard view of a lit up geometric shapes. This is considered a romantic visition since it somehow represents a city and Gibson never mentions personal computers. The idea that cyberspace could be a hallucination shared by everyone represents the complete idea of the world wide web in the sence that we are all connected.
The comparison of cyberspace to a city presents the new comparisons of the social classes. Who is the rich and who is the poor? Cyberspace is mainly available to those who have the means to connect to a computer. Therefore are we creating new definitions of status based on who is and who isnt connect to cyberspace? Could cyberspace be considered he new definition of "urban?" Ultimatly there need to be some sort of balance between the actually citites and this new vast "city" known as cyberspace to be sure that both can remain seperate entities while also coexisting.
